Automotive Working Group

- What is it? The automotive working group is a sub-group of the alliance’s Outreach Working Group, with a focus on both in-vehicle, low power wireless sensor communications, as well as automotive supply chain issues that are being addressed via DASH7 technology. While a number of our members are focusing on the automotive industry, the emergence of Mode 2 and other developments within the Alliance make the creation of a separate working group for automotive a necessary step.
- What is the mission of the Automotive Working Group? First, ensure that the needs of the automotive industry are reflected in future updates to the ISO 18000-7 standard as they are managed by the DASH7 Alliance. Second, raise awareness of the benefits of DASH7 in the automotive industry.
- Where are the DASH7 market opportunities in automotive? Today, opportunities seem to be most abundant in two areas:
- In-vehicle communications. An initial focus for the working group is tire pressure monitoring, but other in-vehicle applications (e.g. key fob apps) as well as connectivity between the vehicle and other vehicles or “smart” roadside infrastructure like concrete barriers or actual highway pavement with temperature or stress sensors built in.
- Supply chain applications. Local- or campus-area applications like managing fleets of vehicles in a yard or managing inventory in a warehouse is a current focus. Wide-area applications like in-transit location and condition monitoring of vehicles, components, and supply chain assets like ISO containers.
- Why is this important? First, the automotive industry represents one of a few key “on ramps” for future DASH7 customers and, we believe, the automobile represents an important “third place” for internet of things applications (home and business being the first two). Second, many of our members are already serving the automotive industry, primarily around supply chain and other manufacturing process-related apps. Finally, many of us like cars and think this whole DASH Alliance thing is a backdoor way of getting to test drive a Lexus LFA or a Pagani Zonda for a weekend or two.
- When does this group meet? Discussion of the business rhythms for this working group will be explored in greater detail at our next meeting in September 2010.
- Who can join this working group? Any DASH7 principal or charter member can join. For info on becoming a member, contact Paul Ritchie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
